Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition (EmpCo)
Directive (EU) 2024/825 on empowering consumers for the green transition through better protection against unfair practices and through better information, known as EmpCo, strengthens consumer protection and aims to prevent greenwashing.
What is EmpCo about?
The EmpCo Directive strengthens consumer protection and is intended to prevent misleading environmental and sustainability claims. It introduces stricter rules against greenwashing and requires such claims, as well as sustainability labels, to be clear, transparent and substantiated.
It also introduces new information requirements, for example regarding durability, repairability and software updates.
How has the industry prepared for the Directive?
In preparation for the introduction of the Directive, the German Publishers and Booksellers Association (Börsenverein) has worked closely with its members to address all relevant areas requiring action. Libri has actively supported this process.
